Happy International Women’s Day 2022 (IWD)

By Ryan Harvey

Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8th 2022 is all about celebrating the inspirational and iconic women in our lives, whilst also continuing to fight for gender equality. This year, the International Women’s Day (IWD) theme is #breakthebias. It tackles gender bias, pushing for an end towards stereotypes and discrimination towards women.

Why is International Women’s Day important?

As a mum of two young daughters, I want them to have the same opportunities, experiences and respect as their male friends. I don’t want them to be turned away from a job when they are older just because of stereotypes and biases associated with their gender! I want my girls to grow up in a world where difference is valued and celebrated. It’s also an important day to celebrate the amazing achievements of women across the world.

What can we do to support International Women’s Day 2022?

Together as a community, we can show support by raising awareness of issues women face on a daily basis and sharing the #breakthebias movement on your social media. It’s time for women to speak out and celebrate the times we have broken the bias.

This year, to show support to the cause, IWD are encouraging people to share a picture of themselves doing this pose to show support for women all across the globe and raise awareness of the #breakthebias movement.

Iconic women that inspire me:

Marilyn Monroe believed men and women should be equal

Anyone who knows me will tell you that Marilyn Monroe is one of my biggest inspirations of all time. Not only is her style, grace and character iconic, she was also a feminist during a time where “feminist” was a dirty word.

In July 1955, a journalist asked if it was true that she did not wish to be referred as a feminist. “I am not a feminist!” she snapped. “I do not believe the world can be run in compartments, but by the joint endeavours of men and women as equals.”

“That is exactly what a feminist is,” cried the journalist. “I knew she was a feminist!”

Reminder: we shouldnt’t feel ashamed to be a feminist! Feminism is for everyone and it is defined as “The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes”. See, nothing to be ashamed of!

Malala Yousafzai continues to fight for the right of girls to go to school.

“I tell my story not because it is unique, but because it is the story of many girls.”

Not only is her story heartbreaking, but the strength and perseverance she has shown to fight for equal rights for women is truly inspirational. This incredible woman overcame an assassination attempt by the Taliban in occupied Pakistan at the age of fifteen, to campaign for women’s rights and children’s rights to an education.

Michelle Obama became the first African American First Lady.

“Friendships between women, as any woman will tell you, are built of a thousand small kindnesses… swapped back and forth and over again.”

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama made history as first African American First Lady. She is also inspirational as she continues to fight for equality and education which empowers women across the world. In addition, she rose against racism and sexism which she faced in her husbands eight year reign as president

Rihanna continues to push the beauty and fashion industry and make it more inclusive.

“Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

Fenty beauty in my opinion is a work of art that fills the void in the beauty industry. Fenty Beauty cater to makeup wearers of all skin types and tones. The makeup lines and collections offer a wide range of pale skin tone products to dark skin tone products. Fenty beauty goes beyond skin colour and type, empowerment and inclusivity are at the heart of Rihanna’s masterpiece. In addition, they are also cruelty- free!
